How Fats Affect Your Calcium Absorption

Most people know that vitamin D plays a role in calcium absorption, but what many don’t know is that the best source is the ultraviolet rays from the sun, which convert skin oil to vitamin D.

Getting too much of this vitamin is called hypervitaminosis D. Many of us have experienced the pain and discomfort from too much time in the sun.


But, did you know that this is actually caused by a deficiency of fats? Also known as essential fatty acids or vitamin F.


Here’s how it works. 


Vitamin D picks up calcium from your gut and puts it into your blood while vitamin F takes it from your blood and puts it into your tissues. Should you get vitamin D but no vitamin F, your blood calcium level will increase at the expense of the tissue calcium level. This is because vitamin D not only picks up calcium from your gut but, in a deficiency of vitamin F, it also pulls calcium from your tissues back into your bloodstream.


That’s the reason that people who are in the sun a lot and who don’t get enough oils, get hives and sunstroke. Sunstroke is due to high blood calcium levels (too much vitamin D) and low tissue calcium levels (insufficient vitamin F).


Excess vitamin D from extreme exposure to the sun is known to cause cancer. Most people today have been thoroughly warned about this and, of course, the sunblock manufacturers love it!

Well, let’s blow some myths away. It’s only dangerous if you are deficient in fats! Good fats, that is.


One of the symptoms of vitamin F deficiency is itchy skin. That’s because there’s calcium starvation. The same goes for hives – those big welts that some of us get around the tender parts of our bodies.


Even canker sores, which are caused by a herpes simplex virus. If your tissue calcium stays sufficiently high, you can actually control the canker sores. So, if you do get them, use it as a sign that your tissues are starved of calcium.

So, it’s not only important to take calcium but it’s also important to ensure that all other factors needed for full absorption and actually nourishing your body are present in the right form.

Calcium needs magnesium in a specific ratio of two parts calcium to one part magnesium with the correct pH, vitamin D and vitamin F for your body to be able to absorb it into your bloodstream, tissues and cells.

Calcium also needs magnesium to work properly and these two minerals must be correctly balanced. In order for your body to use calcium efficiently, it needs to be in a 2:1 ratio with magnesium and another vitally important factor is the pH. It is important that the pH is correct and that this is done with either apple cider vinegar or vitamin C. Failing to have the correct pH can result in calcium depositing where you don’t want it to such as in kidneys, joints, eyes, etc.
